They are already accepting deposits for the 2011 Mustang.

Since the Mustang was introduced on April 17, 1964, Ford has reserved a special event for April 17, 2010, just 46 years later. For starters the 5.0 Mustang will be available to order in January 2010, as a 2011 model. Carol Shelby will re-introduce the GT-350 after Ford officially announces the 302 has returned. Since there is no substitution for displacement the 6.2 Liter V-8 will also be made available in the model year 2011. With the ordering guide in hand these 45 Anniversary cars should be on the ground and ready for delivery in April 2010. This is just a little of the pre-view of the events Ford and Shelby has planned to celebrate the 45 anniversary of the Mustang.

That statement is slightly vague concerning the 6.2, though implying it will find a spot on the Mustang line. The GT350 is also interesting and where, accepting rumors of a Boss model to be true, would that fit in what with the GT350 essentially being the pre-Boss 302 Boss 302 (road racer oriented model).

As for the 6.2, that would make for a perfect strip-oriented Mach I, a latter day 428 Cobra Jet. A plausible spread might then be:

Base 3.7 -- gotta start somewhere, but the V6 will no longer be at the competitive bottom against the Stang and other new rivals. With current GT level chassis and brake tuning, this might appeal to more than secretaries and hair dressers.

GT 5.0 with about 375hp, SRA and focused mostly on readily accessible cheap performance.

GT350/Boss 302 with the 5.0 amped up to around 400 or so but with next level chassis bits, perhaps including an IRS perfect for road and track.

Mach I with a torquey 425 hp 6.2, plenty of flashy scoops, slats, ducts and wings in a live axle chassis destined for street and strip.

GT500 with a current 5.4SC, what's it up to now(?), rating of 540 but with a load of pig iron excised from the nose to actually give it handling that is more than simply deliberate. This thing might actually have the option of either the SRA for drag queens interested in the 1/4 mile straights or an IRS for those interested in going more than a quarter mile and even steering a bit.

So, when's the LA Auto Show?

Does seem odd to mention the 6.2 considering the context of the rest of the statement unless its out of ignorance or meant to be a little misleading.

He does say that he has the ordering guide.

What he doesn't mention is pricing. He doesn't have this. He basically needs a deposit with some deal north of the car's delivered MSRP.

Is this guy a salesman at a dealer? I'm curious bc I just put an order in for a 2010 yesterday and a 2011 wasn't mentioned as a possibility... wonder if I can change my order and if the price would be significantly different...

Yea, he is a salesman. That was an exact copy/paste from his email.

The price will be much different. The 2011 will have a price increase, an increase due to the new engine, and probably a stiff ADM (additional dealer markup).

Is THAT what the A in ADM stands for? I always thought it was another word beginning with A...

I don't think Ford will be able to *****-nilly jack up the price like they have when they were the only game in town.

Remember, Chevy Camaro 1SS already has a 426hp, six speed, Brembo-braked pony car, with IRS included, starting just under $31K, about the same as the Stang GT premium which is probably most comparable feature wise. The Stang GT "standard" starts at only $28K but is a relative stripper feature wise. And both these Stangs are a cog short, sport econo-sedan brakes, are shy a hundred ponies and ride on a cheap goat-cart axle out back.

Of course, these are only spec sheet comparisons that say absolutely nothing about the qualitative merits of these cars or how well all these bits and pieces work together, which is fodder for thousands of posts on any number of forums.

That all said though, I think the basic point stands that Ford is no longer the only pony in the paddock and will have to be far more aggressive, price wise, than they have in the past. I think they'll have to restrain themselves to within about a grand of the two respective Camaro models (1SS, 2SS) with the standard and Premium GTs.

Ah, gotta love what real competition does for us buyers though!

Yeah it has to stay competetive to an equally equiped Camaro
You won't see the prices jump. Most of the increases were built in with the 2010 to bring the price up gradually
