What does it take? (new head unit)

How involved is it for someone who is a relative noob with car audio to install a new head unit in a stang?

I have my 06 GT with a Shaker 1000 and I want to get this
http://www.alpine-usa.com/US-en/prod...model=IVA-W200.

Is it simply, just taking out the stock head unit and plugging this one in, or am i vastly underestimating Ford's proprietary systems? I mess around a lot with electronics and build computers for a living, so I can do it (i think), its just that the ins-and-outs of car audio are unknown to me.

Thanks!

You will need the following two things, but if you buy from Crutchfield they are supplied with the unit. (They also provide instructions on how to remove the console, etc to get to the radio)

METRA 70-5521 WIRING HARNESS
&
METRA 99-5807 FACE PLATE KIT

Replacing the head unit is not hard at all, if I can do it anyone can.
BTW, nice choice. I have the IVA-W200 and hard wired XM Radio.

Correct! It is an easy install, but be aware that some of the instructions on the Master Sheet I got from Crutchfield were dead wrong. If you have any snags, don't hesitate to ask here. We'll keep you from breaking that plug on the backside of the A/C controls

(don't laugh, a LOT of you have broken that cam-lock plug. admit it)

+1 to all of the above. I love my Alpine and XM Head unit. The only thing I would add, and this was for a Shaker 500 install, assume the same for a Shaker 1000, is the addition of a 5V Voltage Regulator to alleviate speaker pop when powering up....Here is a link that was very helpful for me. This is not a Shaker replacement, but same process....

Yeah, I broke the harness lock on the fan speed ****. That was the first time I took off the center panel. The plug stays put, but I hate having broken stuff on my car.

thanks for all the help. i really want to go with the IVA-W200 because i already own the Alpine Blackbird, so i can just get the cradle and use my current GPS with the new head unit. Only thing keeping me back now, is I need to figure out where to put the GPS cradle (am thinking on the low left on the passenger side) and where to put the GPS antenna (passenger side, far right, as close to windshield as possible).
