Exclamation Mustang vs. Tire Wall @ Hallett Circuit

Edit: Pics might not show up because my uploader bandwidth got nuked. Full set and story also here: http://racersweb.com/forums/ford/153...-only-one.html

Before

Hallett/CarFX Project car:

During
Oh **** Oh **** Oh Shiiiiiiiiiiiiit:

Note the bolt-in roll hoop punched through the floor...

After
Driver and passenger both unharmed (somehow):

THUS ENDETH THE LESSON

Apparently this wreck happened at Hallet Circuit, in Jennings Oklahoma.
I've talked to a few drivers that are familiar with that track, and they believe that this happened as a result of the uphill Left-hander just before going into turn 8. Too fast or braked over the crest of the hill, rearend got loose, carried left off of the track into the tire wall.

Apparently, this is a pretty common wreck at that track (minus the rollover carnage).

Track map:

I would recommend some Meguiars Scratch X for that. A little elbow grease should take that right out.

I think I'd get a refund on that roll cage.

And of course that will buff right out.

How about the weak ass floor that the roll bar is attached to, and punched through?

Of course, to be fair, a total pancake like that is not what is usually looked at when designing a car. In real life (tm) (not a track) this is not nearly as likely to happen, so yeah, it's not as strong when it *does* happen.

In any case, I somehow think the corrosion protection warranty is not gonna cover this.

That's why rollcages were invented. Also, Every rollcage I've seen in a race car has the floorpan reinforced where the rollcage attaches to it. Guess this one was just for looks?

You are a Ford Mustang! You're an American classic -- fast, strong, and bold. You're not snobby or pretentious, but you have what it takes to give anyone a run for their money.

What the heck. I had to read about this on a local forum so I could come back here and see it again.

That is an epic crash though.

I'm thinking the roll cage was mostly due to the direct angle at which it would have hit the ground. Usually when one gets used, it's actually rolling, one side at the time, here, you have a near direct force onto the bar, so it's going to instantly push on both floor connections, and in this case through

It may have held up in an actual lateral roll scenario, but I wouldn't be in a hurry to test it out. The bar should be reinforced with gusset plates to the B/C pillar area of the vehicle where there is vertical structure to help absorb the impact.

This incident aside, I like their style.

Talk about lucky! After seeing those pics - may the parties responsible for that "rollcage" do it right for subsequent installs and use one with bars that extend to the base of the windshield/footwell area. Looked like a bolt on install to me. Scary.
