Train Wreck Heading for Houston?

I just heard a rumor that a train wreck occurred on the way to Houston and involved a car / cars loaded with Boss Mustangs. The tally includes 5 Boss and 3 LS cars, all totaled. If anyone in the area can find out any more information it would be greatly appreciated.

Also, if anyone in the Houston area is expecting a Boss in the next few days it might be worth a call to your dealer just to check.

The person that told me of the rumor got a call from their dealer (in Houston) and his car was a black LS. He was told they would have video of the car in a few days and that all cars would be crushed.

He was also told Ford would fast track a replacement order - available in 15-18 weeks!

Wow that sucks. Seems like they could do it faster than 15 weeks.

I would think the insurance company would have all none damaged parts taken off and then have the rest of the car crushed. Maybe there will be some desirable Boss parts available for sale in the near future.

Ford's policy is, and has been since I worked for a transport fleet in '79, that any car damaged in transit is crushed in it's entirety. As is usually the case, they used to auction damaged vehicles until it was discovered that transport drivers were taking 'orders' for vehicles that needed to show up at auction, and doing sufficient purposeful damage to fulfill those 'orders'. Sorry, end of that program!

The LS 'owner' that reported this to me is my brother.

Well, that's fine, I can understand Ford's stance on that... but it doesn't answer the question:

If there were 20 Boss LSs on the rail cars... and they're crushed... do they build another 20, or are the orderers SOL?

That question has been posed to the dealer and the response will determine whether he waits the 15-18 weeks for a car or bails. Ford WILL build cars to fill the orders, it just isn't clear if they will be the same VIN or a later number.

I've got a good friend in Houston that used to be a GM field engineer. He went through a similar situation some years ago where 92 new trucks were damaged during a derailment. He had to watch them all go through the shredder without removing so much as the lighter.

I remember this happened to a bunch of GTOs on a transport train about 6 or 7 years ago.

wow i'm not an eco crazy or anything but that seems so wasteful, ford or GM could take those cars back strip em and sell parts as refurbished.

I have a college buddy who works for DOT and he told me that all the cars will be crushed. It has to do with what happened years ago. Cars were supposed to be disposed of and taken to a scrap yard where some of the cars made it out of the scrap yard and were repaired and put on the street. Then someone was was either hurt or killed with one of these cars and the liability went back to the manufacturer so now they do not salvage anything but shred all the cars and do not remove so much as a lugnut. Apparently if you were to put a fender on your car off one of the wrecked cars and something happens to your vehicle it could be blamed on being sold a "defective" part. Chalk one up for our blood thirsty attorneys.

I witnessed freight that was at a derailment site being crushed by a bulldozer on the spot before being transported to a dump, one boxcar was full of bicycles and the local townsfolk raided it before the railroad officials showed up.
