New issue of MMFF - Boss 302 + CJ intake and cams
Saw this on the newsstand last week.
http://www.mustangandfords.com/how-t...l/viewall.html
I kinda hate the way they set up the dyno comparisons, but anyway:
Stock - 391/352
Dynatech LT Headers + Catted X-pipe (stock tune and airbox) - 416/365
CJ Intake/TB + CJ Cams + PBTH CAI + Tune - 452/376
At least half of that 36 hp gain was probably from the CAI and tune, based on what I've seen in the past.
The same magazine did a different test a couple of years back:
http://www.mustangandfords.com/how-t...haust-install/
Baseline - 380/329
LT Headers, OR X-pipe, CAI, Tune - 440/378
Not exactly apples to apples due to the 11 hp difference in baseline and the catted mid pipe vs OR mid pipe (although the cats in the one test don't really look like real cats, lol).
Still, depending on how you slice it, the CJ intake manifold, CJ throttle body, and CJ intake and exhaust cams all together seem to be worth only maybe 10-15 hp.

Couple of additional points to consider:
- That intake cam was originally designed for the Boss program. It has 1 mm more lift and 3 degrees more duration 13/263 vs 12/260) than the stock cam. I remember reading awhile back that during the design of the Roadrunner program it only showed a gain of 3-4 hp and so they decided to go back to a shared intake cam with the Mustang GT for cost savings.
- The article on the Cobra Jet last year indicated that the new exhaust cam (290 vs 263 duration) was good for around 20 hp, but only when running with open headers, not through a full exhaust.

Very interesting information. Guess it might give us a pause....to really consider cost / benefit ratio when considering the "Full Monte" of the CJ intake, bigger cai and CJ cams. That's a very serious investment.....and if it yields 11 additional ponies or even 20.....

This confirms in my mind that the Ford engineers that created the Boss engine got about 90% or more efficiency out of the design given the cost, warranty, and emissions constraints. To date the best bang for buck NA upgrade remains a full Kooks (or other brand - but we have confirmed results from the CoolTech guys on this) no-cat exhaust, CAI, and tune of your choice.

The mods list is
Ford Racing Cobra Jet cams M-6550-M50BEXH and M-6550-M50BINT
Ford Racing Cobra Jet Manifold M-9424-M50CJ
Ford Racing Cobra Jet Throttle body M-9926-CJ65 (dual blade)
Ford Racing Cobra Jet CAI M-9603-M50CJ
Bassani Xhaust long tube headers
Bassani Xhaust X Pipe with test pipe adaptors
Bassani Xhaust race catback
I picked up the car today from Cunningham Motorsports in Murietta.
Ryne is an amazing tuner and he has the car running like a dream.
The baseline was 434RWHP and 354RWTQ on a Mustang Dyno The headers and full exhaust were installed before we got a baseline with out.
With the Cams, Manifold, Intake and TB the care made 473RWHP and 369RWTQ.
the car pulls very hard and sounds amazing. I was smiling ear to ear on my way home.
If you are looking to stay all motor I would highly suggest these mods.
Stay tuned for a full write up on www.stangtv.com for dyno videos and install tech.
