My wife and I are not getting close to rated mpg with our 2.0 ecoboost escape. The absolute best we have ever gotten was 24 mpg. The worst was this winter at 16 mpg. My wife is an extremely careful and conservative driver. With our previous Edge with the 3.5 V6, we would routinely get 24-25 mpg with a low of 18 mpg. I have a Ram caravan for work and drive it like I stole it. I still get over 24 mpg fully loaded with 20 fire extinguishers and all my tools and plumbing supplies.

I don't see why air flowing straight through the engine would cause any sort of emissions issue.
Interesting. I hadn't thought of it that way. Shut the fuel off, keep the air flowing for the purposes of spinning the turbo like you said.

I'd prefer that 2.7l V6 EcoBoost over the four banger in the Mustang.

If you toss it in 6th as soon as possible, it makes a huge difference. Before while using mainly 4th and 5th and basing it on keeping rpms under 3k, I'd get about 15mpg 80/20 city/hwy. By using 6th as soon as I'm up to speed (regardless of that being 35mph or 60mph) I get just over 17mpg. It would be even higher but I still drive like a jackass when not in 6th.

Why even buy a Mustang if you going to drive like that. You buy a Mustang to have fun and to enjoy driving it. What you described doesn't sound like fun at all.

I have plenty of fun. Are you saying that while driving you constantly accelerate to no end???

Maybe I shouldn't have said "as soon as possible". I drive it normally. But when I'm at speed, instead of sitting in 4th or 5th, depending on speed. I throw it in 6th no matter what.

Normally I like shifting around 3-4k RPM if traffic permits. I try to stay out of 6 gear unless I'm going above 50 unless there a slow driver in front of me. I tried driving like you described for a month but gave up the first week. It remind me so much of my Honda. I still get around 24 MPG which is not bad at all. I have a 2011 V6 by the way.

That is why I also included a comparison of two other vehicles that are rated less than the Escape, but still get better mileage over the same roads. Ecoboost economy is pure hype IMO.

.
.................The late 60's, 427 tri-power Vette made 435 hp !! ( factory rating )

That's exactly how I used to drive. Only using 6th for higher speeds. But after changing that mpgs went way up. Maybe it's the 5.0 or the 3.73's but cruising in 6th isn't bad at all. Worst case I'll drop to 5th for a second.

I'm a 6th gear junkie too. Even if its bogging on me at 35mph. If I'm not getting on it.. why waste gas? (and yes, of course I get on it... )

Exactly. If I'm cruising at speed, why not have it in 6th around 1200 rpms. Still have enough power to go if need be and I can always downshift.
