2014 GT Engine tick

Hey guys. My engine developed a metallic tick after last oil change. I went back to dealership and they said they don't know what it is, might be related to piston#1 and want to completely tear apart engine to FIND the problem then hopefully fix it.

Here are the facts.

2014 mustang gt with track pack
JLT cold air intake
SCT tune- I did it, only changed for intake and 93 octane.
13,250 miles.
3 oil changes
**** this is important... I think
Car came with 5w50;
1st oil change- 5w50
2nd oil change- 5w20
3rd oil change- 5w50

Tick only occurs when:
Car is completely warmed up and only at an idle between 700 & 1400 rpm

Any ideas? Recommendations on what to do or what might be wrong? I'm not super smart with car stuff so any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

The warranty issue with the tick

The dealership said they won't know if it's covered under warranty or not due to "the extensive modifications and tune" put on the vehicle.

Can I return everything to stock and take to other dealership without them knowing?

I have had the same exact tick on mine after first oil change. It is very common, you will find many threads on this. The tick on mine goes away after couple thousand miles then comes back with oil change. I have 12k miles.

Same tick here. Had a guy at for take it apart and heck everything, didn't find anything wrong. He talked to ford and said only thing they can do is if car starts having problems. So I just ride around with it. Supposedly we just have loud engines with lots if noise.

I actually think our engines are pretty quiet(when not raced lol). The new bmw turbo sedans are extremely noisy.

@ABN2014gtTrack

I had the same issue . I made a post here about it:

https://themustangsource.com/f804/an...victim-526111/

Do like I did and see at which exact temperature the ticking starts happening.

My car got totaled so it's gone but I never had the tick come back for about 4 months after the service.

Have your dealer try this from my post:

"Dear Friends,

I got my car back this morning and throughout today, I've put the car through 4 warm up cycles while idling and the issue appears to be resolved.

The dealer advised that they thought the noise was coming from between the tranny and the engine. However, when they called the Ford hotline they told the tech to remove the engine drive belt and see if the issue would remain. The issue still happened with drive belt removed. So they pulled off the tranny and inspected flex plate and torque converter. No damage was found. Ford hotline instructed put the car back together. Technician put the car back together and tried duplicating the issue. The noise was gone.

Conclusions: unknown. My thoughts are: tranny mount or something inside the housing not bolted up good enough at the factory. I'm happy to report that my tranny is still tight after the work and no new noises or scratches on my paint.

Hopefully this thread helps others."

Also check to see if you have the noise with the ac off. I have a new 2014 mustang now with 2k miles on it. I have not changed the oil yet. This new Mustang has exhibited the same ticking noise but only when the AC is on. It's odd because on my previous car ( the one that got totaled ), it didn't matter if the ac was on or not as it had the tick regardless. On this new car only when the ac compressor is turning. Weird !

I have other issues with this new car and will be making a new post soon.

Just got my car back yesterday since the ring/pinion is on back order.

Just for giggles I ran it with the ac on and heard the ticking/tapping noise everyone is complaining about. When I turned the AC off, the tick goes away. Easy issue in my case.

::update::

The engine is still making the same sound with the AC on or off.
I took the CAI off and returned to stock tune. Only addition left is the axle back exhaust. Driven about 500 miles, the noise is still there.

Thank you for the info, ABN2014gtTrack. I understand you don’t feel comfortable providing your VIN and name online. However, I’m not able to assist without it. You’re more than welcome to contact our CRC at 1-800-392-3673.

My car has 2000 miles and no oil change yet and it started doing the ticking sound too. I bought it to the dealer 2 days ago, they told me they think it may be the lifters but are doing more tests.

Thanks Deysha, I don't know if i should escalate this though, the dealer has acknowledge that the engine has a ticking, they are still trying to diagnosis the cause and they have said they will try to fix it. Only thing is they have had the car for 3 days already and they said it will take at least a few more days.

I believe I have had this tick you guys are talking about, but it only shows up every once in a while. I'll keep watching this thread for updates

Not my video, but this is basically the inconsistent tick that I have at idle, and more so when running the car between 1700 -2000 rpms. Most people got it after an oil change, but I have just over 2000 miles and no oil change yet.

Knock on wood but my car at about 7,400 miles does not have that kind of noise. When I changed the oil at around 4,600 miles, I used Motorcraft 5W-20 oil and the Motorcraft FL-500s filter. I hope mind stays tick free.

I just got my car back from the dealer after sitting there for a week, and now they claim the noise is "normal." First they acknowledge there was ticking, then they say it was the lifters or fuel injectors, they said they performed different diagnosis, had their "specialist" inspect it, and talking to the Ford hotline they decided it was normal on Mustangs and it should go away after 7,000 miles. I do not know whose a$$ they pull that explanation from, I don't know what to do, take it to another dealer?

You’re welcome to bring it to a different Ford Dealer for a second opinion, kanine. Once you choose which one you’ll be bringing it to, PM me with all of your info so I can escalate it.

Thanks Deysha, I will, I have to wait till end of August though, I need the car as my DD and the dealer stated they did not find anything wrong and the car is fine to drive.
