ok, this is just a question that i've been thinking about lately. The cobra is more or less a high performance car and a vert adds a significant ammount of weight. So basically thinking of those 2 factors along with the fact that there is now a 300hp mustang gt thats available as a vert already, why would soemone want a high performance car with the added weight? I don't mean to offend anyone and know its personal choice, but I was just curious.

the same reason they make an M3 vert and a Ferrari Spyder, i guess they figure that a convertible is cool enough to justify the weight

The vert only adds 150 lbs. or so, right? That isn't that much (not really noticable on the GT models).

But, I do agree with you on the GT500 -- it doesn't seem to make the most sense to me. It is like the Vette convertible for me -- I never got that either. The base model even has the targa top, but people still buy the verts.

Others cars might be a different story, though. The M3 vert is a "look how much money I can spend" status symbol, and the Modena Spyder is the only open-air Ferrari experience I am aware of. Plus, I SERIOUSLY doubt any of those owners have ever explored the true potential of those cars.

It is like the Hummer owners who never go off-road -- they buy the car for image (as most people do).

That being said, Ford should try and sell as many GT500 verts as possible to help get them out of trouble. If people are willing to spend an extra $5k or so, the better for Ford.

Most people don't race their cars so having a car that you can do open air cruising and drives like a bat of heck all wrapped in one vehicle is a bonus. Besides, if you wanted it to be a performance car, you can take the weight back of the vert. Most Vipers are verts as well while we are on the topic of high performance cars that come with the open air cruising. The Z06 on the other hand does not have a vert option.

Well, there is no rule saying that convertibles have to be slow. Why wouldn't someone want a GT500 vert? It really depends on what you are doing with the car, if you are going to do competitive racing or want to shave time off your quarter times then you would want to get the coupe. In real world driving, the difference in not that significant.

Nail on the head. +3
In non-competition driving, this won't mean alot, but having a drop-top does (to me) to about 1/4 of the potential buyers.

I have to agree with the comments above regarding the additional 150 lbs being pretty insignificant in a car of this power level. As for the "why", It's pretty simple: some folks like horsepower, some folks like the open air, and some folks like both
