Throaty 70s muscle car exhaust sound
#1
Hey guys, i'm thinking of upgrading my exhaust on my auto gt. However I want to be sure I get the best sound. One of my friends drive a pretty much stock chevy silverado with the 4.8 I beleive engine. He put a flowmaster super 40 and it sounds like some serious muscle truck. I like the sounds you hear like on a 70's mustang or camaro. I really don't like the racey light hum sound or high pitched vroom sound. I like the gurgly, rough sound. In later model year cars (mid 90's and and above) I've noticed it more in camaro's than mustang's. Any why do you guys suggest I do to achieve that sound?

American Thunder Axle back Flowmasters have just what you are looking for. They were designed specifically for the 05-06 mustang and are very similar to the Flo 40s your friend has.

Flows are definitely the way to go if you want a deep muscle car sound. However, I've noticed that if you take out the cats and go with an off-road x-pipe or pro chamber setup with the Flows....they seem to make a high pitched note for like a second or two at around 2,500 RPMS. Its kind of annoying, but if you keep the stock h-pipe with the cats...the Flowmaster American Thunders sound killer!
I am waiting to get my off-road h-pipe from Brent at brenspeed.com, and hopefully that will alleviate some of the problems those of us with flows and an off-road setup are having.

Flowmasters are a little too rough for my tastes. I think the exhaust tone should be more about quality than quantity. I'll get some audio of my setup (JBA Titanium Ceramic-Coated Shorty Headers and Magnaflow Cat-Back) tonight or tomorrow.

I have the American Thunder Kit from Flowmaster and love it.
Here's a link to all the Flowmaster sounds. The Super 40 is the
muffler used in the American Thunder Kit.

Flowmasters add a nice low rumble and they sound very good. I have been very pleased with them.
I made a couple video clips of the Flowmaster American Thunder exhaust a couple of weeks ago. If you want to check them out, go to my website www.2006-Mustang-GT.com, and click on the "My Video Clips" icon on my homepage. There are 2 videos at the bottom of the list that are of the Flowmasters. I hope this helps you out.
I paid about $275 or $285 for these Flowmasters from Summit Racing, which includes shipping costs.
