Where can I get the Spark tool?
Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!
I'm changing the sparkplugs on my 06 with only 24k miles. 7 came out ok, of course the 8th broke! Where did you get the removal tool & tap? Any suggestions from unfortunate who've done this before? Service Tool 303-1203 (I assume the tap mentioned in the TSB is seperate?) Thx PS: I followed the TSB exactly |

Buy a 9X1mm tap and tap the hole. Then get a peice of ready rod (threaded rod) the same and use a stack of sockets with a washer and a nut on top to use to draw the part out of the head. I made my own tool (I am a machinist) just like the ones you can buy when I did my F150, 3 of those broke.
Go to a F150 forum and search on this topic. The 5.4 uses the same plugs and there are a few home made kits that work fine. My buddy has my tool now, he is changing his plugs in his Mustang this weekend.

Thx for the info,
Found the tool for $75 shipped, I'll go ahead and give it a try. Oh well, I'll just have to drive my beater next week. |

The TSB mentions stuffing a vacuum cap down the slug. Any reason to do this, what are the chances some metal shavings will fall in?
How do you know how far to thread the tap/tool before trying to pull it out? Thx |

The reason is because there is an excellent chance that the tap will push chips down the hole. Chips will damage the cylinder walls if they get in and the crank is turned.

The tool came today. It was comical how easy the plug tip came out. It took longer to read the instructions than it did to use the tool. I did shove a vacuum cap down the tip as a precaution.
Oh well, that little project is over. Anyone want to buy the tool? |

I went with the 1 piece Champions # 7989, $105 shipped from Rockauto
Make sure you google rockauto discount, there's always a 5% discount code floating around. |

I bought the Lisle extractor tool as insurance. I knew if I bought the $79 tool in advance I would never need to use it so it was worth the investment. My plugs came out with just a quick soak in break cleaner.
I have loaned it out twice in two months though. |
