Cool My Gas Mileage, 2006 and 2007

I track my gas mileage stats every time I fill my tank.
Here's a graphical analysis of the stats since I first bought my car.
I'm a nerd, so I find this interesting, maybe you will, too.

Car: 2006 Mustang GT, 4.6L V8, 5-speed Manual, 3.55:1
Total Mileage Accumulated: 16,9xx
2006 Average Miles Per Gallon (Combined City/Highway): 19.48 (Std. Dev 1.60)
2007 Average Miles Per Gallon (Combined City/Highway): 19.10 (Std. Dev 1.37)

On to the graphical data....

1. Chart of Mileage Recorded at Each Fill; 2006. "Work Week" is what week of the year it is...example: ww14 2007 = week of April 1.
Overall, the mileage was between mid 16 and mid 23 range.

2. Chart of Mileage Recorded at Each Fill; 2007. Same type of data for 2007.

3. Chart of Gas Price vs. Week of Fill; 2006. This chart tracks the trend in the price of gasoline over the course of the year. This chart begins on the first week of April, 2006, and runs to the end of the year. The Y-variable is the Price-Per-Gallon of gasoline. Note that this is for 87 Octane.

4. Chart of Gas Price vs. Week of Fill; 2007. Same chart as above, but for 2007 data. Notice the switch from 87 to 91 octane at the beginning of the year. This is due to re-flashing my PCM with an aftermarket 91 octane tune for more power.
The last data point on all of the 2007 charts is ww23.3--TODAY.

5. Average Gas Mileage vs. Average Speed; 2006 & 2007 Combined. This chart does not draw out the differences in data points due to various high-consumption events such as drag racing or road racing, but the connected line shows the general trend of increase in MPG at speed. This is AVERAGE speed over the course of one tank of gas. I could get a very good snapshot of mileage at a particular range if I were to record data for only a portion of a tank, but this chart captures both city and highway mileage. I can get 28-29mpg on the highway around 70mph if I reset the gauge while driving at that speed and engage the cruise control.

6. Average Mileage vs. Type of Driving; 2006 & 2007 Combined. This chart shows how the average consumption per tank is affected by various competition events, as well as normal driving. "Jerome" indicates a mostly-highway road trip taken earlier this year.

7 & 8. Gallons Used vs. Gallons Pumped; 2006 & 2007 Combined. These charts help indicate how accurate my in-car gas gauge is! Looks like in 2006 I missed recording a few fills, hence the large difference spikes.
Generally, the car's gauge is pretty accurate compared to the pump's gauge, as shown in the 2007 data. This is very good, because when the car tells me I've only got a gallon left, I know it's not lying!!

Anyways that's my nerd way to kill time at work during this slow week.

The 07 GTs are a lil heavier than the 06....cause of the Gt500s. I hope that helps.

And while yer at it... Turn off the part where the gas gauge turns red, that way when you run out of fuel it will come as a complete surprise!

It tells you 0 with 1.75 gallons left in the tank. Fill it up right when it says that, 14.1-14.3 every time(mind you, when selling them I've filled up about 50+ other then my own at this point on the gauge). I think the line with the E works just fine. I drive 4 miles to work, so if I don't fill up I can get stuck to that beeping every 2 miles for 4 days+ The message center is only good for MyColor and the odo. Its not like the old car, where you could get a digital tach or the actual correct speed(without the needle's fudge factor) out of the tiny odometer display.

No...I don't know what you're talking about.

This is my data, on my 2006 GT during 2006 and 2007.

They beefed up the floor pans and stut tower sheet metal on the 07's. Can't imagine it weighing much more though.

1. Not looking for gas mileage, just sharing my data
2. I'd love a C6, I'll be in the market for used Z06 once they get into the 50K$ range

Just curious as to what program you were using to plot all of this.

I just made a simple excel chart for mine and wouldn't mind plugging in all my data.

Car: 2006 Mustang GT, 4.6L V8, 5-speed Manual, 3.55:1
Total Mileage Accumulated: 10,093.41
2006 Average Miles Per Gallon (Combined City/Highway): 17.18 - heavy foot
That's from August 1, 06 to May 31, 07.

Nope...Most of my hiway driving is up in the mountains.I do hammer the throttle on acceleration ramps.I have a Freestyle with a V-6 that doesn't even get this type of fuel mileage,it averages 24.0 hiway.I'm a little baffled at your garnny comment, whats wrong with a hi-performance car getting good economy?
My buddy's 03' 350c.i.Vette is getting around 30mpg witha 6 speed stick driving 75mph.

I'm using a program that is for stats graphing called JMP, but you can do it all in Excel if you're willing to do a bit more data manipulation before you graph everything.

I actually used Excel for the last 2 graphs as I was too lazy to re-arrange the JMP data into a format that it was happy with for those.

For any that want to start doing this on their own, here is the excel sheet that I print out to record all my data at the gas station. I then transfer the data to my other program.

This sheet is sized for a normal piece of printer paper, but if you want to record all your data on this, I suggest using one of the other sheets in the file.

I actually don't take my Mustang to the gas station to be refilled until I'm within three-tenths of the amount it took me to fill it up the last time I was at the gas station. For example, on my last refill it took 16.812 gallons to fully refuel my car, so I won't refuel my car again until my gallons used display reaches about 16.5 gallons. As you can tell, I like to get the most out of my tank of gas before I refill. I'm clocking about 25.8 miles per gallon average just for informational purposes.
