Aftermarket billet gas cap
#1
Hello everyone, long time reader, first time poster. My brother and I have developed a prototype for a replacement rear fake gas cap on the 05 Stang. We are now looking for some feedback on whether this is something that we can market. The main body is billet aluminum with a brushed SS cover that is removable so that the owner can change the lens and logo/emblem. In addition, we have incorporated an LED light behind the lens that would be tied into the taillights to backlight the emblem during nighttime driving. Any feedback would be appreciated (positive or negative). Thanks and good work Brad on the site, I check for new info every day.

It had better be removable like you say....and hopefully without tools. So, I guess you have to remove the faux cover every time you want to open the trunk from the outside??? Nice concept but, I don't mind the stock version.... just my thoughts.

What about the keyhole?
Looks ok, but personally, i dont like the led idea. But I think the younger crowd would buy em like hotcakes... they seem to love lights and flashy stuff.
You may have to get licensing from ford for the logos though... ?

The led, while a neet idea...is hit and miss.
I haven't seen the cap upclose enough to know whether its plastic or metal.
The brushed alluminum from the concept would look good...
Wonder if anyone will make pony replacements for the grille/gas cap of the 'concept' running horse.
Some like it, some don't.
Afterthought....
What about a completely metal one with outline of the mustang logo that lights up..not the background... (lines of the logo)
If anything, that would look better......if your going for the light up
So when the breaks hit...you see a red pony in the gas cap.

It is an excellent idea, it could turned out to be a money maker. Brushed aluminum beats plastic any day. I would consider one for mine if it were the same design as the stock (whenever I get one).
Caution: Make sure you keep records of your design and where you post. Someone is bound to steal your idea and manufacture it.

Thanks for the verification. So Ford put a keyhole in there because they where required to? I'm not into the fancy lights either....got the teeny boppers putting lights everywhere....even in the windshield washers...LOL.

If remember correctly
The Thunderbird doesn't have a keyhole...and is remote only
Interior or FOB
And isn't the battery located in the trunk...
and the battery is needed to open the trunk...
so when the battery goes dead....
see where i"m going with this?
I think a 12v reverse charge through the accessory outlet was required.
One thing that hasn't been cleared up.....though....
Window seal thingy...
ON the 05. We all know the windows seal when the door is closed.
What happens if the battery dies while the windows are in this 'sealed' area. Can you still open the door? or are they stuck in the seal? and SOL
Sorry..have to sell the car, and get a new one

We all got wire cutters. Just cut the wire and place it on. It looks good on the picture. I would consider one if they are cheap enough and looked good enough. More styles would be better. I'd like to have more faux caps to choose from. Otherwise i'm sticking to my stock one.

Thanks for the feedback so far. It's always good to get a lot of differing opinions, and you guys have some pretty good ides. Here are just a few more specs to what we have so far.
1. The body is 6061 aluminum, machined or polished finish.
2. the trim ring around the lense is brushed stainless.
3. The LED was mean't to be wired into the running light where you can see the running horse at night.
4. The logo would be purchased as is to avoid copy write problems, and we could either sell it to you or give you the option of buying your own.
5. Alot of different emblems could be offered icluding a cobra, get the idea.
6. The product can also be offered without the Led if you like, could be an option.
Anyway, just a little more info for you. Here is a different pic.

I think it could be a great idea for those that don't like the one that came on it.
A side-note. You'll be hardpressed to patent that, and protect it as a unique idea. However, if you're first to market and can build a reputation, that will be as equally as important.

Very, VERY nice. I like that a lot. Keep up the great work! Welcome also! And I'll let you know that it's good to have a technical guy that can come up with ood products and actually showcase them...

I think it looks good. Although, I don't mind the stock one(s).
One thing I noticed about your new design, is that the emblem part could easily be stolen using Mr. Allen wrench. Unless you are planning to make most of your sales from replacement inserts, you may need to use a different method of fastening. Maybe somehow from the back?
