1992 mustang gt gas leak

Hi all

I have been driving my gt quite a bit this past weekend. When i went to back the car out this morning, i could smell a strong odor of gas. I shrugged it off and did my errands. When i got back, i noticed a trail of what appears to be gas. Sure enough it was and it was a steady drip. But then, everyonce in a while it drops enough to create a small puddle. I also noticed that the gas stopes leaking when the engine is shutt off. The gas comes out of the right rear side of the car. Which is almost near the right exhast pipe!!!

Any ideas on what could be the problem?

Well can you give any more details like what kind of fuel lines are running close to the exhaust (rubber, hard metal)

just from what you said I would say that maybe the fuel line going to your engine is cracked or rubbed throw by the exhaust maybe. Thats why it only leaks when the car is running.

Im pretty sure they are metal, the former owner, who is in my family, thinks that they are metal too and they have just gotten corroded or something
The engine has couple of problems like it idles rough whenthe engine is cold and it miss fires when its between 900-1500 rpm...could this have possibley weakined the fuel lines?

Take a look at where the hardlines go either into rubber lines or where at the connections. The idle problem can be because you are getting air into the fuel lines. The miss fire can be from the timing being off.

Does it miss fire any other time or just between those rpms?

1st thing is fix the fuel leak, get it on a lift or jack it up and find our where it is coming from. Once the fuel leak problem is fixed then check for any codes ( remember codes can be present w/o the check engine light being on) you could have an egr code, dirty maf, dirty iac, etc. it is easier to help once things get ruled out vs jumping around.

For the fuel leak, look around the filter area this can a rust prone area. work from the tank forward, then if needed drop the tank. The lines can still be purchased.

no the miss didn't effect the lines.

My neighbor is a big mustang guy and he came over and did a couple of things. The car gave us a fuel relay code and an egr code. We couldnt find a jack but he thought it could possibly be the gasket/oring that goes around the fuel filler neck(apparently those usually rot on these cars. He said it comes from the right rear of the car near the exhast pipe. And we charged up the battery just for the hell of it and the airbag light started to go off.
And no i dont do much of my own work. The car now has a pretty long list of repairs including all this and both mufflers need to be replaced. The last time i even replaced something was back in 02 when the radiator went out. Its had the engine problems for 5 years.

I had a similar problem, though probably not as serious as yours. The 1979-04 Mustangs tend to have the rubber part of the filler neck deteriorate with age and cause leaks I had to replace it in my 97 a couple years ago...I think the part was $40 or so.

It would only leak when the car is off is the tank is fuller than the height of the filler neck.

The filler neck gasket can be purchased, local stores may have one but 50resto, NPD, etc have OEM ones. The tank has to be dropped enough to get the neck out. I'm not totally convinced this is it w/o it being up in the air or on a jack. My car had teh same problem, I had to replace the rubber seal around the neck, it was really only an issue when putting gas in and getting the level up like stated. shutting the motor off doesn't have an effect on the filler neck seal like it would with a line. Also what where the code #'s you got ? The air bag blinking is a code, in our tech sticky go to post #8 " air bag tech" there is a link for '92 air bag info and related codes to fix the light.

I would say its either filler neck or the gasket. Ive had the filler neck get a hole and the gas came out pretty good on fill up and when the car was sitting. The Gasket could also be bad, you should be able to pick it up at your local dealership for under 30 bucks. That would be my guess.

yea the car does not leak when it is being filled up
It actually does not leak at all when the car is not on. But when running, its a constant drip of fuel. I have a feeling the leak is where the fuel line connects to the gas tank.

i would put it up and stands and let it run. no reason to keep guessing. your gonna have to look and see where its coming from.
